What is BBL BroadBand Light?

BBL is an innovative technology that sets new standards for skin conditions associated with aging, active life-styles, and sun damage. BBL energy allows your physician to precisely treat age and sun spots, small facial veins, and many other skin conditions. Your treatment will be tailored to match your skin type and your desired results.

How popular has the new BBL treatment been?

Extremely!! I have never advertised, as the results speak for themselves. People come in to have one area treated and are so impressed they then have multiple areas done. Several patients have ‘BBL’d their whole bodies!!

Safety and effectiveness:

Obviously not just any therapist can perform the procedure. How do people go about finding the right person for the job? Why do they need to be so cautious?

I have been working with the BBL laser for the last 10 years, I have also trained other clinics on how to use their BBL devices. I absolutely LOVE my BBL machine however it is strongly advisable that the person who performs the treatment has appropriate training and experience. If the person is not fully trained and qualified with an in depth understanding of assessing different skin types (i.e. Caucasian vs. Indian vs. Asian) as well as understanding the fundamental physics of the machine, then the outcome will not be satisfactory.

Every skin type responds differently to different lasers and settings. On the other hand, an untrained user may also be under-treating the skin, causing the patient to have excessive numbers of treatments with less than optimal results while costing a lot more.

With the proper use of the technology the average number of treatments with BBL is around 4. I have seen many patients go to less experienced operators who have had 12 treatments with very minimal improvement in their skin. The machines can vary from R150 000 to R1 500 000. The less expensive machines are very basic with few variations in settings and parameters. As a result they are limited in using them on all different skin types, increasing the risk of marks on the skin. They also are generally less effective in safely delivering results.

How does BBL work?

The patient looking for better results than microdermabrasion or light chemical peels can offer, yet, still has little time for the healing process. Any area of the body can be treated including the neck, chest and hands. Finally a safe effective treatment that can treat sun damaged hands necks and chests, removing sun damage, broken capillaries and brown age spots.

What conditions can be treated with BBL?

  • Pigmented Lesions (e.g., freckles, age spots)
  • Vascular Lesions (e.g., small blood vessels)
  • Acne
  • Skin Firmness
  • Uneven Skin Texture
  • Unwanted Hair

The latest BBL treatment, what does it involve?  and why is it better than other treatments such as IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)?

The BBL is a new advanced treatment for sun damage, facial capillaries, redness, pigmentation and general skin rejuvenation. The treatments also improve the general skin texture as an added value – with reduction in pore size.

Any area of the body can be treated including the neck, chest and hands. Finally a safe effective treatment that can treat sun damaged hands necks and chests, removing sun damage, broken capillaries and brown age spots.

The treatments are very quick, safe and highly effective with minimal downtime. In contrast to other technology (i.e. IPL) fewer treatments are required (2-4 compared with 5-6). The treatments are much less painful due to the physics of the machine as well as the sapphire cooling plate that cools the skin while the treatments are performed. This not only minimizes discomfort but also allows higher energies to be used and therefore greater results. The cooling mechanism combined with the variable pulse width and energy means we can also customize the treatments to suit and treat all skin types. Other technology does not allow as much variability in the settings of the machines and therefore are not necessarily suited to treating a wide variety of skin types.

The treatment initially involves applying an anesthetic cream to the area for 20-30 minutes. The actual treatment lasts anywhere between 10 -20 minutes depending on how many areas are being treated (ten minutes for a face, 15-20 for face neck and chest). After the treatment the skin feels a little warm and ice packs are applied for 15-20 minutes. The warm feeling is usually gone after 30 minutes. At this point the skin is a little red, the majority if the redness is gone by the next day. Makeup can be worn straight away. The brown spots and pigmentation go darker and gradually fade out of the skin over a week.

There is no breaking or peeling of the skin. Treatments are performed 2-4 weeks apart.

Does the BBL also help skin conditions? How often are people coming in for these reasons?

Medical conditions and medical problems can also be helped by the BBL. I have treated red scars from skin cancer surgery on the face very effectively with BBL. BBL is also used to treat rosacea. Not only does it improve the look of the skin by removing the redness and capillaries, it also reduces the sensitivity of the skin that many rosacea patients suffer from.

What areas can be treated?

Any area of your body can be treated. The most common areas are those most exposed to the damaging effects of sunlight. The most popular treatments are on the face, neck, back of the hands, chest and shoulders.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments needed will vary from patient to patient and we will personalize a treatment plan based on the level of improvement you desire. We may also combine your treatment with other procedures to further personalize your treatment.

What will happen during the procedure?

Your eyes will be protected with safety shields or glasses. You may briefly feel a warm or “rubber band snap” sensation as the light is absorbed by the targeted areas. Your procedure may take a few minutes to half an hour depending on the size of the area to be treated and the type of procedure performed. Your physician will discuss all of your options with you.

Will it be uncomfortable?

The procedure is gentle, non-invasive, and safe. Generally, there is no need for a topical anaesthetic, however, we may choose to use it on more sensitive areas.

How long will it take to recover?

This is a non-invasive and gentle procedure with virtually no downtime. In most cases, you are able to return to work, apply makeup, and resume most of your activities immediately.
