Laser on Dark Skin

Over the years it has become evident that laser cannot be done on dark skin

BUT times have changed.

I have been in the industry for 14 years now. During this time, I had the opportunity to work with a wide variety of machines, products and technologies and with many different Doctors and Specialists. I truly believe that in the Aesthetic Industry, Doctor and Somatologist need to work together to be able to offer the best option for their patient. Laser won’t always be the best option to treat certain concerns and so would injectables also not always be the option to treat concerns, and most of the time you need to combine them to get the desired result.

WHAT IS LASER?

Laser stands for LIGHT AMPLIFICATION by STIMULATED EMISSION of RADIATION. You get a variety of laser modalities, such as CO2, Erbium, NdYag, IPL and BBL. Technically IPL/BBL cannot be classified as lasers, but rather LIGHT devices. Lasers and light devices have evolved tremendously over the years from the very first time it was introduced into our industry, back in 1900. Nowadays, these machines have the ability to rejuvenate and resurface the skin as well as treat a large variety of vascular lesions. We also remove fat and reshape the body, remove unwanted hair and treat acne!

With the technology improving over the years, we are now achieving beautiful results with less downtime! And here is the most important part, we can treat with a much higher level of safety for more skin types and conditions, especially the skin types we could not treat safely in the past. So if we compare the technology of today to two or even just ONE decade ago, the improvements are huge!

WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS?

Back in the day, when lasers were not as well developed yet, we would avoid treating a dark skin patient with laser. The reasons were that the risk for complications were just too high. Complications would include:

  • PIH (Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation)
  • Loss of skin color (Hypopigmentation)
  • Hypertrophic or Keloid Scars
  • Blisters/Burns

At Dermology we treat ALL Skin types.

RESULTS MATTER!

Which laser procedures are safe for Dark Skin Types?

We get fantastic results with Profractional on dark skin types when treating ice pick scarring and general scars. This procedure is healing and stimulates collagen, and we often combine it with the Nano Peel.

By using this method we can remove lesions such as DPN’s and Skin tags properly without causing any hyper or hypopigmentation. This is usually done in one session, and sometimes need a follow up session to clear out the last bit.

Although BBL Forever Young won’t be an option for all darker skin types, we have done this procedure on some dark skins with excellent results. We usually incorporate BBL to get rid of freckles or PIH (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation).

Safe and effective laser hair removal can be performed on all dark skin types with these technologies.

Spider Veins and Telangiectasia gets treated with the NdYag laser.

This technology can also be explained as FULL FIELD resurfacing. We remove the upper layers of the skin, to improve skin texture, pores, glow, acne scarring and underlying congestion. This peel is brilliant for all skin types and will leave your skin looking refreshed with a healthy glow.

There is no downtime with Skintyte. This procedure gently heats up the bottom layers in your skin to stimulate collagen. We love doing SKINTYTE on areas such as the abdomen, face and neck.

Sometimes acne needs blue light to dry the spots out and heal them quicker. This procedure can be done on all skin types and also when the patient is on medications such as Roaccutane.

  • PHOTOREVELATIONTM

This is an excellent procedure to perform on all skin types to treat general rejuvenation, sensitive skin and stubborn pigmentation. We often combine this with other procedures.

Laser Tattoo Removal (Q-Switched) technology is excellent on all skin types. We can remove tattoos on any area of the body.

We tend to combine our procedures to get the best results. With years of experience and expert knowledge on how our machines work, we are able to determine the exact combination of procedures that would be the most beneficial for the patient.
