The Microneedling procedure uses a device that is covered with small, short needles. These needles make tiny holes in the surface of the skin. By making these tiny injuries to the skin, we are stimulating the body’s natural healing process. This also stimulates collagen production in the skin and essentially treating fine lines and wrinkles.
The needles are very small, therefore a “fear of needles” will not play a massive role during this procedure. By using a small amount of anaesthetic cream, the procedure is mostly pain-free. Reducing of the following skin concerns can be expected:
-Acne scars
-Wrinkles
-Stretch Marks
-Scars
-General Skin Rejuvenation
Microneedling can be used on any area of the body. The procedure’s settings are done exactly according the skin concern and skin type.
Even though there are many devices available to be able to do this treatment at home, it would be advisable to rather get Microneedling done by a professional in order to avoid any risk of infection or scarring.
Expectations during Microneedling
At Dermology, we use an anaesthetic cream 30 minutes before the procedure starts. Once the skin is ready for the procedure, the cream will be removed and then the skin will moistened with some water. This will ensure for the needling to be done smoothly on the skin. The small needles will create tiny holes in the skin.
Microneedling takes about 20 minutes, depending on the area being treated. Directly after the treatment, redness can be expected, similar to sunburn.
The redness will last for about 2 days, results can be seen in about 2 weeks. However collagen growth takes place as long as 3 months post-procedure.
Microneedling needs to be done in a course of treatments. We usually start it off by doing 4 treatments, every 2 weeks. Depending on the area and skin concern treated.
Deep scars and deep wrinkles typically need more treatments and spaced further apart.
