A Comfortable and Safe laser Hair Removal Option for Dark Skin Types
Laser hair removal is safe and effective for most patients.
There are lasers used that are safe for both lighter and darker skin types.
The most important information to remember is that the experience of the technician will play a huge role in the final results and safety of the treatment and that all lasers are NOT created equal and the quality of the equipment used is of utmost importance.
When deciding on where to go for you laser treatments, always find out
- How many years’ experience the technician has ?
- Where the laser was manufactured?
- Whether the laser machine is FDA approved or not?
Some other useful information on the actual procedure
We Use the NDYAG laser with the Sciton profile system. The NDYAG laser for dark skin hair removal gives you the highest performance available, taking advantage of the LAPG computer-guided scanner for fast, ideal beam placement and perfect coverage – resulting in improved efficacy and fewer treatments.
What is NDYAG laser is an infrared laser that can selectively target microstructures such as hair follicles. It is very effective for lighter skin types, and because of the relatively low absorption of this light by melanin, it is the best choice when treating darker skin types.
What treatments are available?
Waxing, shaving, and the use of depilatory creams are well-established methods for hair removal, although temporary.. These days, the most popular and most effective method for hair removal is the use of lasers which have been specifically designed to damage and destroy many hairs in a short time, and with little chance of complications. People are interested in laser hair removal because it involves new and efficient technology, and because its effects are permanent in over 80% of its subjects.
What is laser hair removal? How does it work?Laser hair removal offers patients a safe, fast, and effective alternative for dealing with unwanted hair. Lasers work by emitting a specialized light that is passed through the skin and preferentially absorbed by its target, be it an unwanted blood vessel, birthmark, tattoo, or in this case, hair. The laser used in hair removal targets the melanin (colour) in the hair follicle, damaging the follicle and removing the hair. Laser hair removal is safe enough to be used on all body parts, including the face, back, underarms, bikini line, legs, and arms.
Can all skin colours be treated?
Yes all skin types (I through VI) can be treated. Skin Type I is very fair, always burns, and never tans (usually people with blonde hair and blue eyes). Skin Type VI never burns (people with black skin and black hair).
Can tanned skin be treated?
Tanned skin can be treated safely, but always inform your physician if you have been tanning or were exposed to the sun within the last three weeks, and he will adjust your treatment regime accordingly to give you the safest, most effective experience.
What happens during hair removal treatment?
Your laser therapist will discuss the treatment with you and decide if you need a topical anaesthetic cream. The area of your skin that is to be treated will be scanned with laser light from the SCITON PROFILE™ system. Treatment time will depend upon the area to be treated. A system for cooling your skin will be used to remove heat as it leaves the follicles and should ensure a comfortable treatment. However, since the sensation varies from individual to individual, a topical anaesthesia can be provided. Let your physician know if you are very sensitive.
How does it work?
The SCITON PROFILE™ laser selectively targets your hair follicles and heats them with infrared energy. Unlike other processes the laser beam treats many hairs at once making treatment of large areas practical. The SCITON PROFILE™ employs a unique computer-guided scanning system that automates the treatment, ensuring that you skin is rapidly and evenly treated. The computer sets the parameters and places the beam in an optimum pattern for your skin. You will have a safe, fast, effective, and gentle treatment.
What will I look like immediately afterwards?
Not everyone will experience the same sensation during treatment or side effects after the treatment. Most side effects have subsided by the following day. Generally, some redness will remain for a one day.
Can Pseudo folliculitis/ ingrown hairs be treated?
Yes. Pseudo folliculitis or ingrown hairs is a type of chronic skin disorder caused by ingrown coarse or curly hairs. This disorder affects darker skin types, and the infrared energy, which is delivered by SCITON PROFILE™ , is the preferred method of treatment.
How many sessions will be required?
With only a maximum of 15% of hair in an area being in the active phase at any given time, several sessions will be required as the majority of the hair will be in the dormant or growing phases. The sessions required will range between 6 – 8 sessions for smaller areas at intervals of 4-8 weeks depending on the rate of hair growth. Larger areas may require more sessions due to some hair remaining dormant for up to 6 years. With the completion of the recommended course, maintenance sessions may be considered to treat the dormant hair that become active at a later stage.
Does treatment hurt?
Most patients describe laser hair removal as feeling “prickly,” or like the snap of a rubber band against the skin. Afterwards, it might feel like sunburn. Pain is definitely not the word to describe the sensation felt during a laser hair removal treatment. Every individual may experience a different sensation; however it is tolerable by many. A numbing agent may be applied to the area to dull the sensation prior to a laser hair removal session for the most comfort.
What is the cost of the treatment?
This is dependent on many factors, including the size of the area needing treatment, the number of treatments necessary.
