When a part of the skin develops in an abnormal growth or is different comparing to the skin surrounding it, it is known as a skin lesion. There are primary and secondary skin lesions.
Primary skin lesions are generally seen from birth and a birthmark is an example of one. These lesions are usually present due to changes in colour; others can develop over time like an age spot. Others lesions that develop or occur over one’s lifetime and are known as blisters, macules, nodules, papules, pustules, rash, wheals, crusts, ulcers, scales, scars, skin atrophy etc. Certain bacteria or viruses can also compromise the skin barrier and result in lesions.
Secondary lesions usually result due to the progression of primary lesions. The original lesion changes due to natural evolution or external factors like scratching that can aggravate existing lesions.
Causes Of Lesions
A bacterial or viral infection can cause lesions to develop over one’s lifetime for example a virus can causes a wart. Some infections can cause lesions all over the body like shingles or chicken pox. Other lesions can result due to sensitivity caused by conditions and also be due to allergic reactions.
Those that are seen from birth may be hereditary like moles and freckles. Birthmarks exist from the time that a baby is born.

Acne, solar keratosis, scarring due to burns, cherry angiomas, kleoids, keratosis pilaris, skin tags, warts, dermatosis papulosa nigra, solar lentigo (age spots), sebaceous hyperplasia.
How to check your lesions with the ABCD method:
• Asymmetrical: warning signs are when they get irregular and are not symmetrical in appearance.
• Border: smooth even borders are normal, when it gets irregular you need to get them checked.
• Colour: uneven distribution of colour or more than one colour or unevenness in colour should give you warning signs.
• Diameter: any changes in diameter.
• Evolution: any recent changes you should contact your Dermatologist immediately.
We advised that all individuals should get their lesions checked and with their consent skin lesions may be removed.
Other Solutions for improving skin lesions:
• Laser: assist with removing raised lesions as well as vascular lesions that result from malformed vessels e.g. birthmarks or hemangiomas.
• Homecare: remedies used at home can bring a lot of relief; it is always advised that a professional recommend the correct products for proper treatment.
• Medications: these are usually applied topically to protect the area affected and help to reduce inflammation. Relief can also be provided by this manner to help with burning, pain or itching sensation. Oral medications help to reduce symptoms of the disease where the infection can be caused systemically.
• Surgery: drainage can help to relieve tension caused by some lesions or removed and sent away if they are suspicious.
