Pigmentation is one of the most stubborn, frustrating, and emotionally taxing skin concerns to treat—especially in South Africa, where sun exposure and hormonal triggers are part of daily life.
Enter: Cosmelan®.
The global leader in professional depigmentation treatments, trusted in over 90 countries, and proven to safely treat all types of pigmentation across all skin tones.
At Dermology, we’ve been performing Cosmelan peels for over 13 years, making us one of the most experienced and trusted Cosmelan clinics in South Africa. And if pigmentation is your struggle, this treatment might just change your life.
What Is Cosmelan?
Cosmelan is a two-part medical-grade depigmentation protocol designed to dramatically reduce:
-
Melasma
-
Sun spots
-
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
-
Hormonal pigmentation
-
Uneven tone
It works by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase, which controls the production of melanin—the pigment that causes dark marks. Unlike most peels that only exfoliate the surface, Cosmelan works deep in the melanocyte, where pigmentation is formed.
How It Works: In-Clinic + Homecare
1. The In-Clinic Cosmelan Peel
The treatment begins with a powerful professional depigmentation mask applied by your Dermology specialist in-clinic. It stays on your skin for several hours (time varies based on skin type), then you remove it at home following our strict post-peel guidance.
Expect some peeling, redness, tightness, and dryness over the following days—this is completely normal and temporary.
2. The Cosmelan 2 Homecare
This is where the real magic happens.
The Cosmelan 2 cream is a continuation of the treatment at home, designed to keep inhibiting melanin production while helping your skin regenerate. It must be used daily for several months as prescribed by your therapist.
Combined, these two steps deliver dramatic long-term results in reducing stubborn pigmentation—while also improving texture, tone, pore size and overall skin luminosity.
Winter = The Ideal Season for Cosmelan
Although Cosmelan can be performed year-round with proper SPF use, winter is the perfect time to start your depigmentation journey. Why?
-
Less sun exposure = lower risk of post-peel complications
-
More time for recovery indoors
-
Clear, even skin by spring and summer
-
Easier compliance with aftercare and sun avoidance
Think of this as your winter skin project—with visible results within weeks and long-term improvements over months.
Why Cosmelan Is Different From Other Peels
-
Suitable for all skin types and tones (Fitzpatrick 1–6)
-
Addresses pigmentation at the root, not just the surface
-
Minimal risk of rebound pigmentation if protocols are followed
-
Includes a full skin regeneration plan
-
Safe for melasma, one of the hardest forms of pigmentation to treat
