From South Africa to the Global Stage: Dermology at Sciton UP Xchange Lisbon
Dermology CEO and Sciton Global KOL Lourette du Toit represented South Africa in Lisbon, Portugal, joining more than 500 medical and aesthetic professionals from around the world for Sciton UP Xchange 2026.
For Dermology, being at the forefront of laser and light-based aesthetics means more than investing in advanced technology.
It means understanding it deeply. Challenging what we know. Sharing what we have learned. And continuing to learn from some of the most experienced practitioners in the world.
That philosophy took Dermology from South Africa to Lisbon, Portugal, where our CEO, Lourette du Toit, participated as a Sciton Global Key Opinion Leader (KOL) at Sciton UP Xchange 2026.
The international event brought together a community of more than 500 aesthetic and medical professionals, including dermatologists, aesthetic doctors, plastic surgeons, clinic owners, CEOs, laser specialists and other industry leaders.
For Lourette, it wasn’t simply an opportunity to attend.
She was there to contribute.
Representing South Africa in the Global Sciton Community
Lourette’s relationship with Sciton technology has been built through years of practical clinical experience treating real patients across Dermology clinics in South Africa.
At UP Xchange Lisbon, that experience became part of a much larger international conversation.
Throughout the weekend, Lourette contributed across clinical, laser, light and aesthetic-business education — presenting, facilitating discussion-led panels and participating in advanced workshops alongside international specialists.
Her sessions explored topics ranging from building an aesthetic treatment menu with long-term patient demand to marketing, patient education, leadership and the role of advanced laser and light technologies in treating patients through different decades of their lives.
The significance for Dermology goes far beyond having our CEO on an international stage.
Knowledge shared globally comes home with us.
Every international discussion, clinical insight, challenging question and new approach adds to the knowledge that ultimately filters through Dermology’s clinical protocols, training and patient experience in South Africa.
Advanced Conversations Around Skin of Colour, Melasma and Higher Phototypes
One of the particularly important areas of discussion at UP Xchange was treating higher Fitzpatrick skin phototypes with laser and light technologies.
This matters enormously in South Africa.
Our population presents with an extraordinary diversity of skin tones, pigmentation patterns and clinical concerns. Treating skin safely and intelligently therefore requires far more than knowing how to operate a laser.
It requires understanding skin biology, chromophores, wavelength selection, patient selection, treatment parameters and the individual patient’s pigment response.
Melasma makes that conversation even more intricate.
Melasma is not simply “pigmentation” that should automatically be targeted with more energy. Appropriate assessment, preparation, modality selection and long-term management matter enormously.
These were exactly the kinds of nuanced conversations being explored amongst experienced practitioners in Lisbon.
For Dermology, participating in education at this level reinforces something we have believed for years:
The technology matters. But the knowledge behind the technology matters just as much.
Why Dermology Has Built So Much of Its Laser Offering Around Sciton
Sciton develops medical and aesthetic laser and light platforms used internationally, with technologies including BBL® HEROic™, MOXI® and HALO® forming part of its portfolio.
At Dermology, Sciton technology has become a significant part of how we approach long-term skin health.
Rather than choosing a treatment because a device happens to be trending, our approach starts with the skin.
What are we trying to target?
Melanin?
Haemoglobin?
Water?
Texture?
Vascularity?
Signs of photodamage?
Or several concerns simultaneously?
Once we understand the target, we can select the appropriate technology — and, when indicated, intelligently combine modalities.
That versatility is one of the reasons Sciton technology has become so deeply integrated into the Dermology treatment philosophy.
BBL HERO and BBL HEROic: Advanced Light-Based Treatments
BBL® HERO™ and BBL® HEROic™ use Sciton’s BroadBand Light technology to address selected visible skin concerns involving pigment and vascularity.
BBL HEROic represents a newer generation of Sciton’s light technology and incorporates features including Intelligent Control™ and the Skin Positioning System™ to assist with automated pulse delivery.
For the patient, however, the technology is only part of the story.
The more important question is:
What does your skin need?
At Dermology, BBL treatments may form part of a personalised plan addressing concerns such as visible sun damage, uneven pigmentation, redness and overall skin quality, depending on individual suitability.
And because skin does not stop at the jawline, modern BBL technology also allows experienced practitioners to think beyond the face when developing long-term treatment strategies.
MOXI: A Different Approach to Fractional Laser
MOXI® is Sciton’s 1927 nm non-ablative fractional laser.
Unlike BBL, which uses BroadBand Light, MOXI is attracted to water within the skin. This makes it another tool within the Dermology laser portfolio for addressing selected concerns involving skin tone and texture.
MOXI can be used independently or, where clinically appropriate, alongside other technologies.
Which brings us to one of Dermology’s best-known combinations.
BOXI: When BBL Meets MOXI
At Dermology, BOXI is our combination of BBL + MOXI.
Think of it less as throwing two treatments at the same skin and more as assigning two specialists to different jobs.
BBL and MOXI interact with the skin differently. Combining modalities allows an experienced practitioner to approach multiple aspects of a patient’s skin within a considered treatment strategy.
Sciton itself recognises BBL and MOXI as complementary modalities within its treatment portfolio, with BBL addressing visible pigment and vascular concerns while MOXI provides fractional laser resurfacing.
But combination treatment is never simply about doing more.
It is about selecting the right technologies, for the right patient, in the right sequence, at the right settings.
That distinction is critical — particularly when treating pigmentation-prone skin.
HALO: Hybrid Fractional Laser Resurfacing
For patients requiring a different level of resurfacing, HALO® is another important part of Dermology’s advanced Sciton offering.
HALO combines ablative and non-ablative wavelengths within a hybrid fractional laser treatment, allowing practitioners to address different levels of the skin during a customised treatment.
It may be considered for concerns including aspects of photodamage, texture, enlarged pores, lines and acne scarring, subject to consultation and individual suitability.
It also demonstrates something that became a recurring theme during the conversations in Lisbon:
There isn’t one laser that should treat every patient.
There shouldn’t be.
From One Treatment to Skin Longevity
The aesthetic industry is changing.
Patients increasingly aren’t asking only, “How do I fix this?”
They are asking:
“How do I look after my skin for the next 10, 20 or 30 years?”
That requires a different treatment philosophy.
Instead of chasing the newest device or performing isolated treatments, the focus moves towards building a long-term strategy around the patient’s skin, age, lifestyle, concerns, skin phototype and tolerance for downtime.
This was central to Lourette’s presentation at UP Xchange: creating a menu of services with durable demand and technology capable of supporting patients through different decades of life.
For Dermology, this is where technologies such as BBL HERO, BBL HEROic, MOXI, BOXI and HALO become more than individual treatments.
They become different tools within a much larger skin strategy.
Global Education. South African Expertise.
Being recognised as a Sciton Global KOL carries responsibility.
It means continuing to learn.
It means being prepared to share clinical experience openly.
It means participating in difficult conversations rather than oversimplifying complex skin conditions.
And it means bringing those conversations back to our teams and patients in South Africa.
Lourette’s participation at Sciton UP Xchange Lisbon 2026 represents another milestone for Dermology, but more importantly, it reflects the standard we want to continue building across the brand.
From Johannesburg and Pretoria to Cape Town, the Cape Winelands and Ballito, our goal remains the same:
to combine world-class technology with world-class knowledge.
Because owning an advanced laser doesn’t automatically make someone an expert in laser.
Experience does.
Education does.
Understanding skin does.
And continuing to learn from — and contribute to — the global aesthetic community does.
